Absence of Periods
The medical term used to describe “absence of periods’ is amenorrhea. Women normally do not menstruate before puberty, during pregnancy, and after menopause. If a woman does not get her period when she normally should, it may be the symptom of a treatable medical condition.
What Causes Amenorrhea? Amenorrhea can be caused by any number of changes in the organs, glands, and hormones involved in menstruation.
There are two types of amenorrhea: primary amenorrhea and secondary amenorrhea.
Primary amenorrhea is when a young woman has not had her first period by the age of 16. Possible causes of primary amenorrhea (when a woman never gets her first period) include:
Failure of the ovaries (female sex organs that hold eggs).
Problems in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) or the pituitary gland (a gland in the brain that makes hormones involved in menstruation). Poorly formed reproductive organs. In many cases, the cause of primary amenorrhea is not known.
Secondary amenorrhea is when a woman who has had normal menstrual cycles stops getting her monthly period for 3 or more months. Common causes of secondary amenorrhea (when a woman who has had normal periods stops getting them) include: Pregnancy , Breast feeding , Stopping the use of birth control birth control methods, such as Depo-Provera
Other causes of secondary amenorrhea include:
Stress ,Poor nutrition , Depression , Certain drugs , Extreme weight loss , Over-exercising , Ongoing illness
Sudden weight gain or being very overweight (obesity)
Hormonal imbalance due to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
Thyroid gland disorders
Tumors on the ovaries or brain (rare)
A woman who has had her uterus or ovaries removed will also stop menstruating
Hay dos tipos de amenorrea: Amenorrea primaria y secundaria
Amenorrea primaria:
Es cuando una mujer joven no a tenido su primer periodo a la edad de 16 años. Las possible causas de amenorrea primaria, cuando una persona no tenido su primer periodo, incluye:
- fayo en los ovarios (organos sexuales femeninos que contienen los huevos).
- problemas del sistema nervioso central (cerebro y la espina dorsal) o la glandula pitituaria (una glandula en el cerebro envuelta en la menstruacion).
- Organos reproductivos pobremente formados. En muchos casos, la cuasa de la amenorrea es desconocida.
Amenorrea secundaria:
Es cuando una mujer que a tenido periodos menstruales normales para de tener su periodo menstrual por 3 o mas meses. Cuasas comunes de la Amenorrea secundaria (cuando una mujer que a tenido periodos normales para de tenerlos) incluye: preñes, amamantar, parar de usar metodos de control de la natalidad, como el Depo-Provera.
Otras cuasas de amenorrea secudaria incluye:
- Estres, malnutricion, depresion, ciertas drogas, perdida de peso extrema, exceso de ejercisio, enfermedad continua, subir de peso rapidamente o estar obeso;
- Imbalance hormonal debido a el sindrome de los ovarios polycysticos (PCOS)
- Desordenes de la glandula tiroides
- Tumores de los ovarios o en el cebrero (raro)
- Una mujer que le han removido el utero o los ovarios para de menstruar.
