Second Trimester

During the second trimester, which begins with the 15th week of pregnancy, many of the discomforts of the first three months will disappear. You will soon feel the baby move and start to look pregnant. The baby will begin gaining weight and its sex will become clear. Using a special instrument called a fetoscope, the doctor will start listening for the baby’s heartbeat.

Second Trimester

Month Four

The baby is growing rapidly, and by the end of this month, the baby will weigh approximately 6 ounces and be about 8 to 10 inches long. The umbilical cord is also growing and thickening to carry enough blood and nourishment to the developing fetus. During the fourth month, you will gain 3 to 4 pounds.

Month Five

By the end of month five, the baby will weigh about 1 pound and will have grown to about 12 inches long. The doctor can now easily hear the baby’s heartbeat. This month you can gain another 3 to 4 pounds. The area around the nipple may also look darker and wider as your breast prepares to make milk.

Month Six

Now your baby is fully formed but is only about 14 inches long and about 1.5 pounds, so there is still a lot of growing to do. The skin is wrinkled and red, and there is practically no fat. You may gain 3 or 4 pounds more in month six. You may also experience some backache.
